September Wrap Up

Happy Fall! The weather where I am at is still pretty warm, but I am so excited for all things Fall. This month has been quite rough; grad school is just as much work as everyone says it is. I have definitely been finding it difficult to actually set aside time to read, or just to sit down and read at the end of the day. So I am a bit surprised with just how much I read this month! It was certainly not my best reading month, but it wasn’t my worst either. I was definitely aided by audiobooks and graphic novels.

I read six books total this month; two audiobooks, two graphic novels, and two regular books. I had a pretty good distribution across genres too, but I think my favorite that I read this month was Check Please: Volume One, which I finally picked up after years of hearing about it. I also read Ninth House, which is of course huge on the book social medias, but I was still surprised how much I liked it. Honestly, everything I read this month was pretty good, which is definitely nice. Even if the quantity wasn’t great, the quality was.

  • The Nickle Boys by Colson Whitehead – 4/5 stars ★★★★
  • Cheer Up: Love and Pompoms by Crystal Frasier, Illustrated by Val Wise – 4/5 stars ★★★★
  • Check Please: Volume One by Ngozi Ukazu – 4.5/5 stars ★★★★★
  • Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon – 4/5 stars ★★★★
  • Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo – 4/5 stars ★★★★
  • There There by Tommy Orange – 3/5 stars ★★★

I will say, after not blogging for a while, I at least have inspiration for many posts, the challenge now is finding the time to actually write them. So right now I have acquired many half-written blog posts, and hopefully some of them will get finished soon.

However, I did at least manage to post once this month! I posted bi book recs for bisexual day of visibility. The only reason I got it done is because it felt time sensitive, but I did do it!

I really am trying to channel Fall, so I love reading everyone’s lists of cozy Fall book recs, like Lila’s and Nasiera’s.
It’s Latinx Heritage Month, and Sofia posted about new romance books with Latinx authors.
Caitlyn reviewed The Getaway List, which is definitely one of my most anticipated books of 2024!

So much good music has come out recently! I have been listening to GUTS so much. Personally, I think Get him Back is the best song, but the whole album is good. I have also really been enjoying Chappelle Roan’s album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. It is super playful and upbeat, and just a lot of fun to listen to.

In case I haven’t mentioned it enough, grad school is very busy. I am drowning in math homework, I have a midterm this week, it’s just a lot of work and my mental health isn’t great. However, my parents did visit last weekend, and it was really nice to see them. My room is also really starting to come together as a acquire more furniture. My daily joys are cooking and eating nice meals for myself, and bringing autumn pieces out of my wardrobe. I am really excited to make pumpkin bread next week and get some fall-flavored things from Trader Joe’s.

  1. Very fair ratings of books. I loved both The Nickel Boys and There There and gave it stellar reviews, but thinking about them in retrospect, I guess emotion regarding their content and message did override for me any literary deficiencies regarding plot or style.
